3rd Gen RX7 5th Gear syncro tips.

This is not a complete How-to. Only a "things I did to get this done".

Disclaimer - this is not necessarily how you should do this project - only how I did it. Proceed at your own risk.

The parts I ordered from Malloy (ray - 1-703-490-8170) were:

W501-17-725C ring, Sync
R503-17-550 Spindle
M501-17-309 Nut, Lock

total $61.25 and they shipped for free.

Gear Puller - bought from advanced auto and then bought steel bars for extension from Lowes. (Cant find the damn thing now to measure and pull part number of puller but will keep looking).

The tough part for me was getting the large nut off. I ended up screwing the housing to a board (my right foot is holding the board from moving) to keep the entire transmission from twisting. Then I put the drive shaft on and held it from turning with another steel bar through the shaft coupling and finally cranking on the nut with a torque wrench. I had heard several ways of accomplishing this including the "rag" trick but couldn't ever get it done until I came up with this.

Note the clean and organized table to the right in this pic - very important to keep things in order when removing so when you put them back on it will be straight forward.

Also when removing the stuff that has close clearance and wont come off easily use a crescent wrench to tap it out.

And here is the goal - my syncro looked perfectly fine. I couldnt find anything wrong with it at all - even under pressure it looked exactly like the new one. But there must have been a difference because when i got it back together no more problem shifting to 5th.

I did a clutch replacement and 5th gear syncro in one weekend with one friend and no lift but it was alot of work and maybe would plan for 3 days next time and take it a bit more leisurely.
